Through its partnership with the federal government, UC is an economic engine for California and the nation - educating generations of students and creating new knowledge, technologies, cures, jobs, startup companies and spinoff industries.

The federal government provides support for the University of California in three crucial areas: student financial aid, research and health care programs. In 2017-18, UC’s estimated federal support was more than $10 billion. These funds help UC educate the next-generation workforce, advance scientific breakthroughs, provide world-class medical training and address national security, energy and environmental mission needs.

The federal government is the university's single most important source of research funding, accounting for more than $2.95 billion in research awards in fiscal year (FY) 2018. The groundbreaking discoveries and inventions produced by UC's scientists at campuses and the UC-managed national laboratories improve lives and fuel economic growth in California and across the country. The National Institutes of 健康 (NIH) is UC's largest sponsor, with UC researchers successfully competing for $1.86 billion in NIH research funding in FY 2018. Overall, annually, federal agency funding accounts for more than half of UC’s total research awards.

The university depends on robust federal investment in public health and prevention to train the next generation of health care providers and provide quality health care. Medicare and Medi-Cal (California Medicaid) patient care reimbursements help UC serve its large share of low-income patients. Approximately 60 percent of UC patients are covered by Medicare, Medi-Cal or lack health insurance. Currently, the university receives approximately $4.3 billion in patient care support.

To help maintain the university's excellence in research, education, health care and public service, UC supports robust and sustained funding for federal agencies - such as the NIH, the Department of 教育, the National Science Foundation, the Departments of Agriculture, Defense and Energy, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and NASA - so that UC can continue to serve as an engine for growth and innovation for the state and beyond.
